Skiing

Riley gobbled down her  breakfast, and raced to her room.  I’m so excited!  I can’t wait!  she thought. Riley got on her gear, and out the door they went! A couple minutes later, “Are we there yet?”
“No, not yet,” Riley’s mom said.
A little later they pulled into the ski center. They hopped out of the car and Riley’s hands were as sweaty as  clams. She couldn’t wait. It was Riley’s seventh ski race.
“Mom look it’s even better, News 12 is here!” News 12 was looking for someone to interview. Riley was in the right place, at the right time.
“Hello. Would you like to be on our channel?” the news reporter asked.
“This is a joke right?  Of course, I would like to be on tv.”
“Helloooo New Hampshire. We are here at the ski center. Now here is Joe, for the weather forecast.” Riley announced.
“ Good luck!”

“Racers, ready, set, gooo!”
Riley stuck her poles into the ground. She took off with a blast.
“Go Riley! Go!” her mother and father shouted.
Riley raced down the hill. She was as fast as lightning. Margaret was gaining on her. But, Riley was still in the lead.
“Come on Riley!” “You got this!” Then the crowd started with a roar. “Riley!” “Riley!” “Riley!”
I can do this. I can do this. Riley went over the jump. Margaret pushed her down. “Ow!” Riley squeezed her eyes shut and held her legs together. Tears rushed down her cheek like a river.
“Mom!!”
Riley’s mom rushed to call the ambulance.  The siren blasted. They quickly put Riley into the ambulance and took off.

Riley finally woke up. “ Good morning, Riley.” said dad softly.
“Hey dad, I’m really hungry.
“I heard the hospital has pancakes and eggs that are really good.  They can bring it up to your
room if you would like.”
“Sure I’ll have eggs and pancakes.”
Knock.Knock, before Riley knew it, the food had arrived.  This smells delicious .  Riley never knew food from the hospital could actually be this good. Usually, it's like all soup or chicken with string beans and extra cheesy mashed potatoes with lots and lots of garlic powder in them. Riley’s meal came with 2 scrambled eggs, 3 pancakes, one itty bitty cup of syrup, 2 strips of crispy turkey bacon , and one small orange juice. Riley took a sip. Nice and refreshing .  Riley tried some of her eggs.  Perfect not too cheesy .  Then Riley took a bite of her pancakes. Oooh, this  has sprinkles in it.  Then she tried her turkey bacon. Mmm ,perfect, nice and crispy.  She tried a little of her syrup.  Not too sweet, but sweet enough .
“ Wow, excuse me. I’m all done.”
“Hey mom when am I going to get out of the hospital?”
“Tomorrow.”
It was lunch time. Riley got sweet mashed potatoes, chicken, and apple slices with cinnamon.  The doctor came in.He checked Riley’s heart beat, blood pressure, and gave Riley a finger prick. Then he shut the door and left. Riley was getting tired. She put the lamp out and went to bed. Next morning.
“Mom could we go now?”
“Sure honey if you really want to go now.”
They pulled into the driveway.
“Dad can you take me to Snow Hill School?”
“Of course!”

Riley was as fast as lightning. “Ahhhh!” Riley crashed into a small tree branch that was hanging. Let me try again .    She kept on crashing.
“You know what dad let’s just go. I can’t do this any more!”
“Sure you can.”
Riley went to her room and slammed the door shut. She flipped through channels. Well it looks like  Margaret won the race.  Riley changed the channel. She liked watching professional skiing. Oooo Jimmy is in the lead. Go Jimmy!  Go!
Knock. Knock. “Hey Riley, they have another ski race, if you want to try it.”
“Sure, I guess so.”

One week later...
“Ready set gooooo!” the announcer shouted. Snow sprayed up in Riley’s face. Riley knew she
could do it. I can do it. I can do it.  Riley knew she was a champion she just never knew she could do, especially after her accident with Margaret. Riley knew she could win it. Her mom knew, her dad knew, and her doctor knew. There’s the finish line! Was Riley gonna win it one last time? She ripped through the big red ribbon.
“Mom, dad, I did it! I did it!” I shouted.
“I’m so proud of you Riley.” “I knew you could do it!

Dear Diary,
It wasn’t bad after all. You just have to believe  in yourself and it might come true. For now , I’m just going to ignore Margaret and her totally  ‘real’  friends. Anyway, I can't believe  I actually did it!  I won the ski race.   Just remember don’t give up!

Sincerely,
Riley
