Football, Please
Finally… recess I thought. “Let's go to the field to play football,” I said to my friends as we were running outside. I asked Luke, “What team am I on?”
Luke said, “You are on Tommy’s team. Do you want to hike the ball?”
I couldn’t wait to hike the ball. “Well what are you waiting for? Let’s start.” The grass crunched under my feet. Two seconds later I blinked. The ball was coming right at me.
I caught it for a touchdown! Now it’s 7-0. Then the whistle blew. “We won!” screamed Tommy.
“No, we won!” answered Luke.
“You guys are sore losers. Well we won fair and square,” said Tommy.
When I got home I asked my mom, “Hey can I play tackle football?” My mom replied, “No, it’s too dangerous.” “Please! Can you think about it, please!” I begged. I stomped my feet as I went upstairs; I wanted to break something. I went into my room and slammed the door and I jumped on the bed and started punching my pillow. I took a deep breath, calmed down, went back downstairs, and sat down on the couch with my parents.
We started to play Sorry. Then my mom said, “We have some news that we need to tell you. Dad and I have talked and we want you to meet the coach of the Denver Hawks.”
“Hold on I’m going to play football!” I said jumping up and down. “If you make it,” my mom said. The tryouts are on Wednesday at 4:30.”
Finally I get to play football. I was so excited, my face was as red as a tomato and I was grinning from ear to ear. I ran around the room jumping with joy. Then my mom said, “Calm down! If you don’t make it on the team you will play on the Weston Sharks. The tryouts for that team are next Monday at 4:25.” I couldn’t believe they were really letting me do this, I thought.
“Tomorrow we are going to get your stuff,” Mom said. I replied “Yay!” Then I helped my mom get dinner ready. I can’t wait until tomorrow, I thought. That night I couldn’t go to sleep because it was too long of a wait. We need to go right now I thought.!!! Somehow that night I eventually went to sleep. As soon as I woke up in the morning, I ran downstairs.
¨Hey Dave,” said dad, ¨Are you ready to get your football gear?¨
¨Of course, I thought you´d never ask,” I said as I hopped into the car. Luckily the ride will only be about 10 minutes. It felt that as soon as I closed my eyes, we were there.
As we walked through the entrance I noticed that the store was so big. ¨Hi, I am John. I will help you today. So what can I get you?¨ welcomed one of the workers. ¨All football gear,¨ said my dad. I ran over to the helmet wall. I think I saw one that had a big D and a big H for Denver Hawks. It was so cool looking. ¨Dad can I get this?¨ but dad was already grabbing it from the shelf.
Now we need shoulder pads. John said, ¨Well, they are right on the other side of this wall.¨ I ran to the shoulder pads, then I tried one. Luckily it was the perfect fit. Next we need cleats, I thought as I ran over to where cleats were lining the wall. “Ooh, look at those,” I said as my eyes came upon a white pair with red stripes. I knew they were expensive, $45, maybe too expensive. Oh I hope they are my size, I thought. John reached up to get them and gave them to me. As I pushed my foot into the cleat, I couldn’t push hard enough, they wouldn’t budge. ¨Dad, I think these are way too small.¨
Then I saw another that was green with black stripes going down the side of the shoe. I tried them on and they felt great; they felt so smooth on the inside. But, they cost $70. I can´t believe my dad said, ¨Well, if they are a good fit we will get them.”
Now I need pants and leg pads. I ran over to the pants’ wall I saw one that had the colors of my team (well, hopefully). I tried them on and they fit well. “Dad, these fit, can I get these?” “Of course,” he replied. When we checked out, I couldn’t believe it cost over $400. I happily threw my gear in the car and we headed home.
It was the day of the tryouts. I couldn’t wait for the tryout to start, but it was not for another 10 minutes. I ran inside and I got ready. Wow this feels great, I thought. I got out of the car and ran over to the field there were about 60 people there. Then the coach announced, “We are going to play a game for the whole half hour okay guys.” “Yes!!!!” said another boy named Jake.
I was on the navy blue team. The quarterback passed the ball to me and I ran and ran. “Yes! Touchdown!” I screamed. We were winning 21 - 14. There were 10 minutes left. I got the football again. Now the score was 45-21. The game was over a few minutes later. We had won.
Then the coach said, “Only 16 people will make it. Okay... Jake, Wesley , Cam, Luke, Alex, Liam, Max, Joe, Peter, Ben, Dave, Jack, Lance, Ryan, Mike and Ian. Thank you all for coming.”
I was so happy, I ran over to mom. “Hey mom, I made it.” “Yaaaa!” said mom, hugging me. “Great job, I knew you could do it,” said dad. Then we went home to celebrate by going out for sushi .
